Kyoto Weekend — Part 6

We explored Kōdai-ji, a beautiful temple founded by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with peaceful gardens, traditional buildings, and a beautiful moon-viewing pavilion.

But the real highlight was the hidden bamboo grove.

Smaller and much quieter than the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, it was almost completely empty when we visited. With the rain falling around us, it felt incredibly peaceful and almost magical.

But after two days of traditional Kyoto, we were ready for something completely different.

Kyoto Weekend — Part 5

After an hour and a half in the rain, we found the perfect place to warm up: Unir Coffee Senses.

A beautiful and peaceful coffee shop, with carefully selected coffee, lovely staff, and a delicious pudding served with coffee and syrup.

We may or may not have done something wrong… but we definitely ate the whole thing.

After all the rain and walking, this was exactly the little pause we needed.

And then, we headed somewhere very special — a place with a little secret.

Kyoto Weekend — Part 4

Still raining, we visited Ryōzen Kannon, home to a 24-metre-high statue of Kannon overlooking the mountains of eastern Kyoto.

Built as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the Second World War, the site is dedicated to remembrance and peace. We spent about an hour and a half exploring the memorial hall, gardens, and surrounding grounds, and even lit a candle.

It was quiet, peaceful, and surprisingly moving.

And after all that time in the rain, I was ready for something warm… and a little something delicious.

A Starbucks unlike any other, hidden inside a traditional 100-year-old machiya in Kyoto’s historic Nineizaka district.

Same coffee, same menu… but with beautiful gardens, traditional wooden architecture, and tatami rooms where you can enjoy your coffee on the floor.

And after our little coffee break, we headed to a magnificent temple dedicated to Kannon.

A rainy day exploring old Kyoto, from quiet traditional streets and antique shops to Gion, local food, and a beautiful Japanese woodblock print.

It was June, right in the middle of Japan’s rainy season, but somehow, the rain only made Kyoto feel even more atmospheric.

And later that afternoon, we discovered a very unusual Starbucks…

Our first Shinkansen ride as a family, an ekiben for dinner… and then a three-hour delay.

We finally arrived in Kyoto at 11 p.m., tired but excited to discover the old city the next morning.
