Unique train experience | Dining on the 52 Seats of Happiness

There are two things I truly love doing in Japan: eating and riding trains.

Today, I’m combining both with one of the most unique experiences you can have near Tokyo — a luxury restaurant train called 52 Seats of Happiness.

Departing from Shinjuku, this beautifully designed train takes us through the countryside all the way to Chichibu, while we enjoy a full-course seasonal lunch served right at our seats.

Elegant, slow, peaceful… and surprisingly family-friendly.

This was more than a train ride — it was a mini escape from Tokyo life.

  • 🚆 52 Seats of Happiness – a luxury restaurant train in Japan

A special dining train operated by Seibu Railway, running mainly on weekends and holidays. With only 52 seats, it offers an intimate experience focused on scenery, comfort, and gastronomy.

  • 🍽️ A full-course seasonal lunch served onboard

The menu changes every season and is created by renowned chefs using local ingredients sourced along the train route. In this video, we try the summer Italian-inspired course while watching the chefs work in the open kitchen.

  • 🛤️ From Tokyo to Chichibu – slow travel with a view

Wide windows, soft music, elegant tables, and a smooth ride make you almost forget you’re on a train. The journey itself becomes part of the experience.

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 A surprisingly family-friendly luxury experience

Yes, we did this as a family of three. Calm atmosphere, comfortable seating, and a relaxed pace make it suitable even with a child.
