Shibamata Feels Like a Nostalgic Japanese Postcard

Today, I’m taking you to Shibamata, a retro neighbourhood in Tokyo that feels like stepping into a Japanese postcard 🏮

Located in Katsushika Ward, along the Edogawa River, Shibamata is known for its nostalgic atmosphere, old streets, traditional sweets, and its deep connection to Japan’s Showa era.

  • 🎞️ Shibamata, hometown of Tora-san

We begin in the birthplace of Tora-san, the beloved character from the long-running Japanese film series Otoko wa Tsurai yo. References to the films can be found throughout the area, giving Shibamata a warm, nostalgic charm rooted in post-war Japan.

  • 🧸 Shibamata Haikara Yokocho & Toy Museum

Next stop is a retro wonderland filled with old-style candy shops, 10-yen arcade games, and vintage toys. A joyful throwback to childhood, perfect for both kids and adults.

  • 🍡 Warabimochi break

Time for something sweet. We stop to enjoy freshly made warabimochi, soft, delicate, and deeply tied to traditional Japanese snack culture.

  • 🏯 Shibamata Taishakuten

We then visit Taishakuten Temple, founded in 1629. Surrounded by nature, it is famous for its detailed wooden carvings depicting scenes from the Lotus Sutra and its peaceful atmosphere far from modern Tokyo.

  • 🏡 Yamamoto-tei

Just nearby, Yamamoto-tei offers a glimpse into refined traditional architecture, with tatami rooms opening onto a beautifully maintained garden — a quiet, elegant pause during the walk.

  • 🌿 Edogawa River walk

We end the day with a calm stroll along the Edogawa River, a serene and open space that contrasts perfectly with the busier parts of Tokyo.

Shibamata is a slower, more human side of Tokyo — nostalgic, peaceful, and deeply traditional. A perfect place for those who love retro Japan and locations away from the usual tourist paths

Thank you for watching.
