Bakeneko Festival in Kagurazaka

🐾 OCTOBER 2025_

Every October, Kagurazaka transforms into one of Tokyo’s most unique and joyful festivals: the Bakeneko Festival. For one day, the streets fill with cats of all kinds — spooky, funny, elegant, and playful — inspired by the legendary Bakeneko from Japanese folklore.

The Bakeneko is a mythical “monster cat” believed to have magical powers, capable of transforming and playing tricks on humans. During this festival, families, children, and cat lovers gather in Kagurazaka wearing makeup, ears, and tails to celebrate this lighthearted side of Japanese culture.

We spent the day enjoying the festive atmosphere, starting with a French breakfast in Tokyo’s French neighbourhood, watching the cat parades, enjoying street performances, and having lunch at an authentic Breton crêperie.

From traditional folklore to local food and joyful crowds, this festival perfectly captures the creative and community spirit of Tokyo.

If you love Japanese culture, seasonal events, and discovering unusual festivals in Japan, this is a celebration you don’t want to miss.
